New supply and drain lines

There are a lot of reasons to need new supply lines and new waste lines. It could be just that your house is ancient and you have old brass water lines and old iron waste lines. Both of those are accidents waiting to happen.

These days, PVC waste lines are easy to install, they are light, and very easy for your plumber to work with as they require simple adhesives and can be cut very easily with a power or hand saw. It requires an assessment, measuring carefully, and then cutting all the pipe to the right size ensuring you have all the correct joints, and doing a dry-fit, which is basically like putting it all together without fastening it. Once the plumber has done the dry fit test to ensure that the new line fits correctly in its new space, around joists or electric boxes, through walls, or ceilings, around ducts, etc, then, and only then does he prep the joints and apply the adhesive.

Copper supply lines have the been the standard for decades but are now being slowly replaced with PEX and other flexible lines. These are the newest kind of supply line and they are flexible and therefore easy to run around obstacles, somewhat like using a garden hose for your supply lines. Of course PEX lines are very strong, and are approved in most towns to be run inside your walls. Copper lines still need to be custom cut to go around corners, and through joists and other obstacles, but they are nearly indestructible, they don’t rust, and the soldering system that has been around for decades to hold them together has been perfected, and while it requires a torch and some specialized tools, it is still reasonably simple to do, even for a homeowner that wants to learn (remember to keep a fire extinguisher nearby, though).

When supply lines age. as they do in an old house or old building, the metal can become brittle, and the joints can come loose, or lose their integrity. They become more susceptible to the thawing and freezing cycle and are more prone to burst. The plumbing in your house has to defend itself from numerous attackers that include cold weather, pipes that knock and shake around, tree roots pushing against them if they are run outside and a number of other issues. When we work on your house, and we have to replace your water lines, or your waste lines, we don’t just do a fantastic job replacing them, we ensure that they are run so that you have a minimum of issues with the elements and other issues that wreak havoc with your plumbing system.

But the main reason why you might want new drain and supply lines is for a new bathroom, a bigger kitchen, an additional sink, or an addition to your house. It’s usually reasonably easy to get a supply line to a new bathroom because those types of lines, whether copper or PEX, can take all kinds of crazy turns, and supply lines have a narrow diameter, usually 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch so they can fit in a very small space, much smaller than the space require by 1 1/2 inch, 2 inch or 3 inch waste lines. Running waste lines is the trickier part of this equation – getting the outgoing (waste line) to the new addition you are working on or new bathroom or wherever. When you install a bathroom right next to an existing one, it can be very easy to simply open the wall, and then tee off the other bathroom with connecting joints and use the same main line that heads down to your main sewage line (which is usually in the basement, but in some cases can be on your first floor).

If you want to install a toilet in a whole new place where there is no plumbing nearby, that requires some analysis and some planning to figure out the easiest route to hook up with your existing lines. Depending on how that plan lays out, it can be very tricky, or not so tricky. A good plumber will be able to size up the situation and come up with a plan that takes the least amount of work – they have a lot of practice visualizing where the new pipes could go, and they get quite good at it.
